The Light Infantry as it is today was
formed on the 10th July 1968 by the amalgamation of the Somerset and
Cornwall Light Infantry, Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, Durham Light
Infantry, Kings Shropshire Light Infantry and the Light Infantry
Volunteers.
There has been Light Infantry in the
British Army since 1740 and it was during the war between England and
France in North America that the British Army established the concept of
light infantry.
