EOD Bomb Disposal Engineers by Graeme Lothian.

An EOD team move down a track in Helmand Province - watched by curious locals. The lead elements carrying a 'Vallon' (IED mine detector) and a dog handler will go out in front of the main command soldiers. If detected, the personnel seen in the rear of the group will make safe the IED and the process can begin again.

Urban Dasht by David Rowlands.

A Combat Logistic Patrol establishes a desert laager for the night, following protracted CLP operations into the Green Zone, Helmand Province, southern Afghanistan. Each CLP traveled in single file during the day, but in the evening would form up in three columns and halt. The personnel immediately carry out clearance drills, searching for IEDs by sweeping the ground around their vehicles with Vallon detectors. A Support Vehicle (Recovery) of the REME with its crane is working to repair a vehicle. The leading vehicles in the column at the right of our view are Royal Engineer assets comprising the Talisman system. A Mastiff command-post with mast-mounted electro-optic sensors has a Remote Weapon System. Behind it is a JCB High Mobility Engineer Excavator; behind it are more RE vehicles including a Buffalo. The leading Mastiffs are also fitted with the SPARK - Self Protection Adaptive Roller Kit for protection against mines and pressure-initiated IEDs. There are some areas of urban desert; that is, in close vicinity of the population but still very much in a desert landscape. Dasht means plain or desert.

Insertion by David Pentland.

Helmand Province, Afghanistan, July 2009. Troops from the Black Watch, 3 Battalion, Royal Regiment of Scotland (3 SCOTS) and Royal Engineers are deployed by RAF Chinook helicopters as part of Operation Panther's Claw.

Crossing the Helmand by David Pentland.

Musa Qala, Afghanistan, 25th May 2008. While returning to Sangin following an operation in support of 2 PARA battlegroup, the Vikings of 3rd Troop, Armoured Support Company, Royal Marines were the target of an enemy ambush. As the convoy began to cross the Helmand river the waiting Taliban engaged the convoy with RPGs, heavy machine gun and sniper fire. Amazingly despite this hail of fire no one was hit until tragically Marine Dale Gostick was killed and two others injured when his vehicle was blown up by a massive IED.

Daring, Dangerous, Delivered by David Rowlands.

On 27th August 2008, 16 Air Assault Brigade launched Operation OQAB TSUKA Eagles's Summit. This was a daring operation to deliver an electricity turbine to the Kajaki Dam in northern Helmand Province, Afghanistan. The Combat Logistic Patrol which facilitated the move comprised RHQ 13 Air Assault Support Regiment RLC, 9 Parachute Squadron RE and 15 Air Assault Close Support Squadron RLC. The Royal Engineers cleared the route of improvised explosive devices, while civil engineers ensured the road was strong enough for the 110 ton Heavy Equipment Transporters. The convoy took six days to get up to Kajaki and another six days for all its elements to get back. This painting depicts the patrol at Forward Operating Base Zeebrugge at Kajaki on 1st September 2008. A Kiowa helicopter is visible, one of two US Kiowas which protected the Combat Logistic Patrol during the whole of its 180 kilometre journey. The other Kiowa would have been ranging slightly farther afield.

The Lonely Battle by David Pentland.

Helmand Province, Afghanistan, March 2010. The Counter Improvised Explosive Device Task Force was originally composed of Royal Logistical Corps EOD, Pioneer, and Royal Engineer teams. Currently the C-IED task force is a tri service formation including units from the Royal Navy and RAF. The most dangerous part of their work involves locating and isolating IED's before they explode, in this case making roads safe to use.

REME Recovery by Graeme Lothian.

Recovering a vehicle in Helmand. A support dumper truck has edged over to the side of the track which has given way under the weight. Two REME soldiers are pulling out the tow-rope (which is made of metal cables) and will attach this to the stranded vehicle. every vehicle will have a top-gunner, heavily armed with an array of weapons - usually the GPMG. When the convoy is stationary for any period of time they are at their most vulnerable to attack, so speed is of the essence to get the convoy on its way again.

Zulu! by David Rowlands.

Zulu Company of the First Fusiliers Battle Group in the attack on Bridge 4, Basra, on the evening of 22nd March 2003. I travelled to this spot in Sgt Jason Wellard's Warrior, and sketched the soldiers as they took up position here. Jason, the 12 platoon sergeant, carrying a 350 radio on his back, controls the fire support group. He is kneeling with his SA80 rifle in hand, giving target indications to the soldier beside him who is firing illumination rounds from the 51mm mortar. Beyond them the platoon commander, Lt Chris Rees-Gay (with radio pack) and three section commanders are planning the attack. Firing its chain gun and flying the red and white pennant is 'Zero Bravo', the command Warrior of the Z Company commander, Major McSporran. The four Warriors of 10 Platoon are crossing the bridge; the commanders of the two leading Warriors fire Schermuly flares to illuminate the ground in front of them.

40 Commando Royal Marines by David Rowlands.

Capturing the Manifold Metering Station (MMS) on the Al Faw peninsula, Iraq. During Operation TELIC, the liberation of Iraq, on the night of 20th March 2003, 40 Commando Royal Marines, under the command of Lt Col G K Messenger OBE, mounted an amphibious helicopter assault to seize key Iraqi oil infrastructure on the Al Faw peninsula. It took around five hours from H hour until the area was deemed secure, and this painting shows the scene at first light on 21st March. As the first conventional troops on the ground, the strategic significance of the operation was immense. The Commando Group's role in the success of the coalition operation in Iraq was pivotal and profound. In a two-week period of intense operations, it secured vital oil installations, cleared a large expanse of enemy held terrain, and defeated a major enemy stronghold on the outskirts of Basra, killing over 150 Iraqi soldiers and taking 440 prisoners.

Operation Charge of the Knights, Basra, Iraq, April 2008 by David Rowlands.

At the end of 2007, control of Basra province was handed over to the Iraqi Security Forces (ISF). A fragile quiet spell was shattered when rogue militias and insurgents made a violent grab for power in late March 2008. A joint operation, led by the ISF, called for US and British support in restoring order and improving security. It was code-named Operation 'Charge of the Knights'. This painting shows a scene in Basra before dawn on 4th April 2008, where Iraqi special forces engage gunmen in a house. Negotiating a series of obstacles placed in the road, a column of British armoured vehicles of the Scots Guards Battlegroup has arrived in support, led by a Challenger 2 tank of B Squadron, The Royal Dragoon Guards (RDG), commanded by Sergeant Chris Richards. As it turned left into the street, the tank struck two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in quick succession; then, advancing up the street, a third IED exploded under its right track. An FV432 Bulldog Mk3 armoured personnel carrier turns left into the street, and men of the Reconnaissance Platoon dismount. One man has a battering ram (a 'thumper') slung on his back. The Bulldog is mounted with the Remote Weapon System (RWS), operated by the Recce Platoon commander. The newly introduced WRAP 2 armour is seen on the sides of the Left Flank company commander's Warrior. Armour similar to WRAP 2 is also used on the Bulldogs. In the background an AC-130 Spectre Gunship is seen firing at designated targets. Each tank in B Squadron (The Black Horse) of The RDG displayed a letter, instead of its call sign, on a blackboard. The call sign of the tank commanded by Sgt Christopher Paul Richards (later awarded the Military Cross) was 'One one'. It bore the letter 'E'.

Sergeant-Major Darren Leigh MC, 1st Battalion The Queens Lancashire Regiment by David Rowlands.

On 9th August 2003 there was widespread and violent disorder across Basrah due to fuel and electricity shortages. In the suburb of At Tannumah a large crowd gathered outside the Iraqi police station. While his company commander sought support from the Iraqi police, Company Sergeant-Major Leigh, with only some 30 soldiers and three vehicles, faced a crowd 300 strong. The rioters were throwing a hail of bricks, then surged forward in an attempt to overwhelm the police station. Sergeant-Major Leighs small force held them back, but came under small arms fire from gunmen behind the crowd. Despite the disparity in numbers, and sensing that his small party of Queens Lancashires were isolated on the far bank of the Shatt Al Arab, with reinforcement unlikely, Sergeant-Major Leigh seized the initiative by rapidly advancing into the crowd to disperse them. One of three grenades thrown by the Iraqis wounded him in the legs. Despite his injuries he led his 30 men in the subsequent baton charge against the mob, which so unnerved the rioters that they were forced to withdraw and eventually disperse as darkness fell. For his quick thinking, courage under fire, and determination despite his wounds, Sergeant-Major Leigh was awarded the Military Cross.

Thrown Tracks by David Rowlands.

Between 27th March and 4th April 2003, C Squadron The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards was attached to 40 Commando Royal Marines on the Al Faw peninsula, Iraq. Corporal Justin Simons was the squadrons recovery mechanic and Corporal James Garrett was the commander of the squadrons Challenger Armoured Repair and Recovery Vehicle - CRARRV. On 30th March, 2nd Troop C Squadron was supporting a Royal Marines clearance operation near Abu Al Khasib - Operation JAMES. A Challenger 2 tank became decisively engaged by the enemy, both its tracks were thrown and it was disabled beside the causeway. Corporal Garrett was tasked to recover it. As darkness fell and under attacks from rocket propelled grenades, small arms and mortar fire, Corporal Simons took charge of the recovery operation. He and Corporal John Morgan dismounted, while Corporal Garrett provided close protection by operating the machine-gun. The tank was successfully winched onto the road, but then became stranded in an even more difficult position. For six hours, in complete darkness, Corporals Simons and Morgan struggled to break both tracks conventionally before finally resorting to arc-welding equipment. Eventually Corporal Simons tried the unorthodox by organizing a CRARRV on CRARRV recovery, which succeeded in dragging the tank to safety, nine hours after it was disabled. Corporal Garrett and Corporal Simons were both Mentioned in Despatches for their leadership, calmness and disregard for their own safety.
