The Battle of Gettysberg - July 1st to 3rd, 1863 by Henry Alexander Ogden (PC) The Battle of Gettysburg was a pivotal engagement in the Civil War marking the turning point of the conflict. It involved intense fighting between Union and Confederate forces, with key actions at locations like Little Round Top and Picketts Charge. The Union victory, led by General George Meade, resulted in significant Confederate losses and effectively halted General Robert E. Lees mvasion of the North boosting Northern morale and solidifying Union control of the region. |
Capitaine Georges Guynemer by Ivan Berryman. (PC) One of Frances most venerated pilots in World War 1 was Capitaine Georges Guynemer whose final victory tally has never been fully established, although he has been officially credited with 53 kills. It is more likely, however, that his actual total was nearer to 88! He is shown here in his Spad S.VII having just claimed his 31st victim, a Gotha bomber. |
The Night Watch by Ivan Berryman. (PC) A Roman legionary was a professional soldier of the Roman army. Often praised for their fighting effectiveness and tactical prowess, they were the foremost fighting unit of the Roman Empire. A legionary would typically be armed with a shield, javelin and short sword. Roman legionaries served as a source of labour as well as their role as trained soldiers, with a significant portion of the infrastructure which connected the Roman empire having been built by legionaries. They would act to keep the peace among civilian populations, with high ranking legionaries also acting as judges to settle disputes in the local populace. |
The Heroic Death of Major von Krosigk, 16th of October 1813 By Richard Knotel (PC) Heinrich Ferdinand von Krosigk was a Prussian major who was killed during the Battle of Leipzig. He died while leading his troops in combat amidst the intense fighting near Mockern. |
Lord Nelson at the Battle of Copenhagen by Arthur David McCormick (PC) The Battle of Copenhagen, fought on August 2, 1801, was a naval conflict between the British Royal Navy and the Danish-Norwegian fleet during the Napoleonic Wars. The British, led by Admiral Sir Hyde Parker and Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson, aimed to neutralize the Danish fleet, which was allied with France and a potential threat to British maritime dominance. Despite fierce resistance from the Danes, Nelson's daring tactics and aggressive strategy led to a decisive British victory. |
Lanoe G Hawker by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Major Lanoe G Hawkers Bristol Scout C 1611, the No 6 Sqn aircraft in which he shot down two enemy planes on 25th July, 1915, and sufficiently damaged a third enemy aircraft to force it to the ground. He is shown here in combat with an Albatross C.III - soon to fall as one of his victims that day. Lanoe G Hawker earned the first aerial Victoria Cross (VC) of the war for this action, but was killed in November 1916, after a lengthy battle with the infamous Red Baron, Manfred von Richthofen, becoming his 11th victim. |
The Battle of Isandlwana by Jason Askew. (PC) The Battle of Isandlwana on 22 January 1879 was the first major encounter in the Anglo-Zulu War between the British Empire and the Zulu Kingdom. Eleven days after the British commenced their invasion of Zululand in South Africa, a Zulu force of some 10,000-12,000 warriors attacked a portion of the British main column consisting of about 1,800 British, colonial and native troops and perhaps 400 civilians. The Zulus were equipped mainly with the traditional Assegai iron spears and cow-hide shields, but also had a number of muskets and old rifles though they were not formally trained in their use. The British and colonial troops were armed with the state-of-the-art Martini-Henry breech-loading rifle and two 7 pounder artillery pieces as well as a rocket battery. Despite a vast disadvantage in weapons technology, the numerically superior Zulus ultimately overwhelmed the poorly led and badly deployed British, killing over 1,300 troops, including all those out on the forward firing line. The Zulu army suffered around 350 killed, and up to several hundred wounded. The battle was a crushing victory for the Zulus and caused the abandonment of the first British invasion of Zululand. |
Prospecting for Cattle Range by Frederic Remington (PC) Cattle ranchers required extensive tracts of land to sustain large herds allowing them to graze freely and move the cattle as seasons changed to find fresh pastures. As settlers and ranchers expanded westward, competition for land led to conflicts with Native American tribes, other settlers, and even within the cattle industry itself. Before formal land claims were widely regulated, many cattle ranchers claimed land by simply moving onto unoccupied areas, or driving away Native American tribes through conflict or bargaining. With the passage of the Homestead Act of 1862, settlers, including cattle ranchers, could claim up to 160 acres of land by improving it, such as by building a dwelling and cultivating the land. |
What an Unbranded Cow Has Cost by Frederic Remington (PC) Conflicts over cattle on the American frontier often arose due to disputes between settlers, ranchers, and indigenous peoples. As settlers and ranchers expanded westward, they frequently encroached on lands traditionally used by Native American tribes for hunting and grazing. This led to clashes over access to grazing lands and water resources. Additionally, disputes among ranchers themselves occurred over cattle theft, property boundaries, and competition for limited resources. These conflicts were intensified by the lack of formal legal structures in frontier regions, often leading to violence and skirmishes that reflected the broader struggles for land and resources during westward expansion. |

HMS Tiger - Battle Survivor by Ivan Berryman (PC) During the First World War, HMS Tiger was fortunate to survive both the Battle of Dogger Bank and the Battle of Jutland, having been hit multiple times in both engagements. At Jutland, HMS Queen Mary exploded and sank just a few hundred yards ahead of HMS Tiger, the latter taking evasive action to dodge the wreckage and resulting smoke cloud. |
The Battle of Trafalgar by John Christian Schetky (PC) Nelsons fleet, comprising 27 ships, faced 33 enemy vessels but employed innovative tactics that included breaking the enemy line, allowing his forces to engage the enemy at close range. Not a single British vessel was lost that day, with the enemy having 1 ship sink and 17 captured. The victory at Trafalgar ensured that Britain would remain a dominant maritime power and thwarted Napoleons plans to invade England. |
Under Attack by David Pentland (PC) Soviet Bt-7 tanks fend off a Stuka attack, Russia, June 1941. The Bt-7 model 1937 was an innovative design. With it’s Christie suspension, impressive speed, mobility, and a 45mm gun, it was a good tank for it’s time. Only supplanted by the even better T34. |
Panthers in the Fog by David Pentland. (PC) Mortain, France, 7th August 1944. Panther tanks of 1st SS Panzer Division 'Leibstandarde' attack units of US 30th Infantry Division in Mortain under cover of heavy fog. Following the successful American breakthrough at St. Lo, and the virtual collapse of the western half of the German line, Hitler ordered an immediate counterattack between Mortain and Avranches to halt the US forces. 'Operation Luttich' was the code name given to this last major German counterattack in Normandy. Initially successful the operation was doomed to failure once the weather cleared and the US air support was brought to bear. |
Objective Cairo by David Pentland. (PC) Egypt, North Africa, 13th - 20th September 1940. Carro Veloce L3 /33 tankettes and MVSN Blackshirts advance into Egypt from Libya as part of the long awaited offensive by the Italian 5th and 10th Armies in North Africa. |
U.123 - The Atik's Revenge by Ivan Berryman. (PC) On 27 March 1942, Q-ship USS Atik (AK 101) received a torpedo hit from the U.123, forward of her bridge structure. The ship caught fire and, as her bow dropped in the water, she developed a list to port. U.123 closed in to finish the ship off, at which point USS Atik uncovered her concealed weapons and raked the U-boat with 50mm fire, killing one of the German crew. U.123 was driven off, but she submerged and fired another torpedo into the Atik's engine room which was the final blow for the brave Q-ship. |

The triumphant victory for the English over the French would be one of the warrior-kings most legendary exploits during his reign and the victory would be met with large scale celebrations on his return to England, with parades and choirs heralding his arrival. |
Tanks on the Marne - France, 18th July 1918 by David Pentland. (PC) Schneider CA1 Tanks of the French tenth army spearhead the successful counter offensive against the German army on the river Marne. Overhead a tenacious Junkers JI artillery spotter dogs their tracks. The Second Battle of the Marne, though not an overwhelming victory, spelt the end of German successes on the Western front, and a turning point for the allies. |
Leutnant Josef Jacobs by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Germanys greatest exponent of the Fokker Dr1 Triplane, Leutnant Josef Jacobs is depicted chatting with colleagues of Jasta 7 before a sortie in the spring of 1918. His black Triplane became well known to allied pilots, not least because of his formidable kill rate. By the end of the war, still aged just 24, Jacobs had claimed 48 enemy aircraft destroyed. The unusual practice of applying the black cross to the upper sides of the lower wings was to counter friendly fire from other German aircraft who frequently mistook the Dr1 for a Sopwith Triplane. |
Close Encounter by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Supermarine Spitfire Mk.1As of No.610 (County of Chester) Sqn RAAF, intercept incoming Heinkel 111H-16s of the 9th Staffel, Kampfgeschwader 53 Legion Condor during the big daylight raids on London of August and September 1940 - the climax of the Battle of Britain. Spitfire N3029 (DW-K) was shot down by a Bf109 on the 5th of September 1940 and crash-landed near Gravesend, Kent, thankfully without injury to Sgt Willcocks, the pilot. For the record, N3029 was rebuilt and, following some brief flying in the UK, was sent overseas by convoy to the Middle East. Ironically, the ship carrying this aircraft was torpedoed en route and both ship and all its cargo were lost. |
